As you imply, I'm sure I read somewhere that the connection between the sensor bar and the Wii is simply to provide power (the bar is just some kind of infra-red source for the wiimotes to triangulate with).
I'm 95% sure I've seen replacement sensor bars that are 'wireless' (you just put a battery in them, I think).
Glad you sorted it - I can imagine how frustrating it would be to have a break in that wire, rendering the Wii temporarily useless. :-)
I'm very thankful that our Bengal hasn't ever shown much interest in the wires of the house; this is a good thing considering how much assorted, colourful wiring there is in my office/server room...!
