Everything else, overblown, over the top, overegged overeffects, lazy writing, fanboi squeeing and all. A depressingly predictable disappointment made worse by RTD's recent demonstration that he can write if he's constrained within reasonable limitations and an order of magnitude (or several) smaller budget.

I have to confess that I enjoyed this episode far less than I thought I would.

There was too much that was contrived. Far too much. Bad dialogue - particularly from Donna spouting a bunch of gobbledegook while trying to be cocky. The rescue at the end was far too convenient. Everybody doing "Boy's Own" slapping on the back, smiles and "Jolly good job, chaps!" while steering the Earth back home.

And why did the Doctor ask Gwen Cooper about her family ancestry?!

Good stuff for the non-intellectual bunch who usually curl up on the sofa. Bad stuff for the rest of us and a missed opportunity to bring the series, which was 3/4 crap anyway, to a close on a high note.

Hopefully Moffat will redeem series 5. In a year and a half...

Gwen Cooper = Eve Myles = Gwynneth in The Unquiet Dead back in 18692005.
