For those of you with a Wii, should the position sensor in the remotes start behaving erratically or not at all, could I suggest investigating the length of the wire powering the location bar for the consequent effects of the application of sharp, white, pointy KITTINS.

Just sayin.

Outer insulation and braid: split asunder. The core and its sheath seem to have survived, astonishingly enough.

ETA fourfive breaks, forsooth. They BAD.

ETA further that I've wrecked one jeweller's screwdriver getting three of the five (tri-wing) screws out of the bar, and settled for splitting and rejoining the cable at its outermost breaks. Turns out it's actually some sort of twisted pair jobbie that lends itself poorly to a solder-and-insulating-tape repair, but my jury-rigged repair is holding for now.

As you imply, I'm sure I read somewhere that the connection between the sensor bar and the Wii is simply to provide power (the bar is just some kind of infra-red source for the wiimotes to triangulate with).

I'm 95% sure I've seen replacement sensor bars that are 'wireless' (you just put a battery in them, I think).

Glad you sorted it - I can imagine how frustrating it would be to have a break in that wire, rendering the Wii temporarily useless. :-)

I'm very thankful that our Bengal hasn't ever shown much interest in the wires of the house; this is a good thing considering how much assorted, colourful wiring there is in my office/server room...!

Yes; [livejournal.com profile] ramtops found someone on teh intarweb running their controllers using a pair of tealights in front of their television.

I suppose it's just Nintendo being Nintendo, using a completely inappropriate cable and non-standard screws on the bar itself.

I had *no idea* you had a Bengal! Tell me more.

To our shame, the Wii hasn't been switched on since we went on holiday in July - it might not have been EnRon at all. But I bet it was.

Iggy (our golden spotty chap) had a huge fondness for cables when he was a boy, and killed a couple of scarts, IIRC. "Citrus", everyone said, "that'll do it". It didn't - but ea tree oil did.

One keeps a complete set of "security bits" for when some prawn thinks he's been clever enough to keep me out of a box I need to fix. Cost about a tenner, nice foldy plastic case so I can always find them.

AIUI one can now aquire wireless sensor-bars.
